The
ruined remains of Dunstaffnage Castle sit near the village
of Dunbeg, Oban, Argyll and Bute, the oldest parts of
which date from the 13th century. Built by the MacDougalls,
the castle was taken by Robert the Bruce in 1309 and he
passed it to Campbell ownership. For the next 200 years
it had various owners until returning to the Campbells
who retained ownership until 1958 when it was passed to
Historic Scotland. The only remaining inhabitated part
of the castle is the gate-house which was built in the
15th century and was restored in 1903. Inside the gate-house
is a display on the various castles within Argyll and
Bute.
